SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF SENSORY INTEGRATION DYSFUNCTION

Sensory Integration is the ability to take in information form the senses (touch, movement, smell, taste, vision and hearing), organize and interpret the input and use this information to interact with the environment. For most children, this process occurs automatically. They are able to hear the teacher’s directions, find their materials and stay in their seat to complete their work. However, some children under or over-react to sensory input and have difficulty functioning in their play, classroom or at home. Some children are over-responsive to sensations and may feel over-whelmed by everyday input. Regular lights, normal touch or typical sounds can make these children feel constantly bombarded. They may avoid touch, messy activities, social situations or the playground. Other children are under-responsive and may seek sensory stimulation by fidgeting, constant talking or not appearing to register pain. Some children have difficulty regulating their sensory systems and sometimes under or over react. This can lead to motor, emotional or behavioral difficulties.

SIGNS OF SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER (SPD)

• Over or under responsiveness to touch, movement, smell, sound or taste
• Avoidance of playground equipment
• Dislike of haircutting, nail trimming or other grooming activities
• Over or under sensitivity to pain
• Avoidance of messy activities or being barefoot
• “Picky” eater
• Constant movement or restlessness
• Poor self organization
• Poor concentration or attention
• Tires easily
• Sleep problems
• Delayed motor skills
• Poor coordination, stumble frequently
• Difficulty learning new motor tasks
• Irritability, anxiety, behavior or social problems

Identification of SPD and intervention can have a big impact on these children’s lives and their families. Through occupational therapy with a sensory integrative approach, by a qualified occupational therapist, children with SPD can improve their sensory regulation, sensory processing, motor skills and learn strategies to enhance daily functioning at home and school.
